The Council is a corporate body in the first tier of local government. It is a legal entity separate from that of its members. Its decisions are the responsibility of the whole body. Councils have been granted powers by Parliament, including the authority to raise money through taxation, known as ‘the Precept’, and a range of power to spend public money.
It normally meets on a monthly basis, generally the first Monday in the month, unless that coincides with a public or bank holiday. The agendas for every meeting are published on this website and Council noticeboards 3 clear working days before the Meeting, and the draft Minutes shortly afterwards, subject to confirmation at the next Meeting. Every meeting is open to the public, who are encouraged to attend, except for those items where the Council formally resolves to exclude the public and press on the grounds that publicity would be prejudicial to the public interest. This would have to be due to the confidential nature of the business.
